Barre makes healthy snacks for dancers and anyone who wants to perform their best!

In the spring of 2010 Julia Erickson, Principal Dancer with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, was rehearsing for the lead role in Swan Lake, Odette/Odile, and needed a convenient, healthy snack to power her through tough swan rehearsals.

Julia and her partner, Aaron (formerly with PBT) had both given up on eating “energy bars” many years prior due to the fact that most of them were glorified candy bars.  So Julia pulled out her Cuisinart and some ingredients from the cupboard and set about making her own nutritious snack designed specifically for the needs of a dancer.

IMAGE Barre - Black Swan flavor IMAGEJulia took her concoction to work at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and ate it before class and rehearsals.  Her colleagues at PBT and the students at PBT School tried it and liked it —can you say light bulb moment? Shortly thereafter Barre began supplying dancers all across the country with healthy snacks.

Barre donates a portion of its profits to arts education and currently offers their real food bars in two delicious flavors, Black Swan Chocolate Berry and Pirouette Cinnamon Pecan. Keep a look out for their next flavor, White Swan, coming soon!

Comments

  1. Nicole says:

    Peanut butter and chocolate!

  2. Lorraine says:

I would make a smaller bar for children and name it understudy. My 12 year old dancer puts in lots of hours and often doesn’t want to stop for a snack. I am thinking this would be something she would totally be willing to try. It would be easy to toss in her dance bag with her water bottle.

  3. Jenna says:

White Chocolate Raspberry Arabesque – yum :)

  4. Alison says:

Mini bars would be an awesome addition. Sometimes our students just need a quick pick me up and the larger bars are just too hard to finish and have a bathroom break, get hydrated and change shoes in the short break time. I would like to see a mocha almond or pumpkin spice. Can’t wait to introduce my students and staff to these!

  5. Sasha says:

Chocolate Peanut Butter Nutcracker Delight ;-)

  6. Julie says:

    Classical Honey and Oatmeal

  7. Mary says:

    Peanut Butter Promenade.

  8. Coya says:

Berry Bourree: black raspberries, oatmeal, and a touch of honey to sweeten.
Banana Walnut Waltz: Banana, walnut, oatmeal.

…those are already my early morning oatmeal concoctions haha.

  9. Lily says:

    I’d like a cherry flavored one :)

  10. Dorothy says:

My daughter tried this once and loved it. Too bad they don’t sell them close to me. I would live to win these for her.

  11. Casse Noisette (Nutcracker) with hazelnut and cranberry and spices like clove and cinnamon. I love that you guys are doing this…yum, yum yum!

  12. Ginny says:

    Chocolate Peanut Butter

  13. Maria Hanley says:

I agree with the chocolate peanut butter! Maybe one with coconut too! I like the comment about making them mini. I could see this being really popular with dance studios, especially with children!

  14. Noa Erlitzki says:

Vanilla Topped Dark Chocolate Almond – it would be dark chocolate and almond inside coated with a vanilla coating (like those yogurt coatings) so that the outside of the bar is pure white and the inside is dark dark dark – of course, it would be called Odette-Odile! Or something along those lines ;)

    I’m hungry now.

  15. Pas de Chat Cherry for all us Cherry lovers.

  16. Benjamin says:

Wow, these sound so awesome!!! I’d have to say I’d want the newest flavor… BLACK SWAN CHOCO BERRY!! :)

    Chocolate Pomegranate Polonaise!

  18. Kelly says:

how about Peanut Butter Chocolate Pas de deux

  19. Diana says:

    White chocolate Raspbouree!

  20. Shannon Lieder says:

I think you should do a mint chocolate!:)

  21. mochazina says:

    apple cranberry allegro! :-D

  22. Kara says:

If a banana/walnut/almond butter/dark chocolate Barre existed, I would freak. So. Yummy. I’d call it “Prima Ballerina!”

  23. Deb says:

Cranberry/ orange. I would call it Glissade ………. gives you the energy needed to glide through your day. :)

  24. Holly Chernoff says:

waltermelon and mint, I would call it crazy mojito :)

  25. Julie B says:

Having 9 and 7 year old dances, I would love to see a kids version of this bar. There are days they are at the studio practicing 4-5 hours a day in addition to the long days at competitions and gymnastics meets, A quick energy snack is always a good thing to keep around. I would love to see a Chocolate CHip or a Honey Graham, kid friendly flavors.

  26. Cait says:

Anything with dried cherries and/or dark chocolate would be lovely!

  27. Beth Fisher says:

I would love Pas de Deux Peaches & Cream.

  28. Kristi says:

How about chocolate peanut butter or banana oatmeal? Can’t think of any creative names though!

  29. Kristi says:

And I would love to see a kids version also!

  30. Mona says:

I’d love to see a bar based on cashews or coconut!
