Surely, you must know by now that I am a tweeter, a twitterist, a twit…

ahem, a Twitter user.

Twitter has a fast-growing population of users. I don’t know about you but more of my “real-life” friends and associates are joining up. I expect the ratio of personal contacts versus internet contacts to continue to narrow. For those not using Twitter, or not really positive what it is you are doing there, even if you currently have an account. Don’t worry. You are not alone. Many people join the site, inject one lonely tweet into the twittersphere, and say to themselves, “Now what?” and leave (never to return).

Thinking about trying Twitter? Or… trying again?

Some thoughts on how Twitter can work for you (and why you may want it to)

What is your purpose?

This isn’t exactly a philosophical question. You just need to decide if your role on Twitter will be to add to the conversation or follow it. I may catch some flak from the Twitterati for stating this but, having something to advocate, promote, share, or bring awareness to, often puts one in the “followed” camp. Meanwhile “followers” are looking to learn from, keep tabs on, or network with the “followed.” Of course, one can be both a follower and followed (in fact that would be ideal, for the more people providing information of value, the better), but I think at first it may help to identify yourself with one group or the other in order to recognize how Twitter might best serve you.

If you aren’t sure yet which you are, read on…

Come to terms with it – Twitter ≠ Facebook

What often confounds casual Twitter users (i.e. those every-day folks who are pretty sure they have nothing or no one to promote) is the thinking that it will be like Facebook, a place where they can keep up with personal, “real-life” contacts. These users join, find only a fraction of their friends are also users, and perhaps see just a lot of folks, well… promoting. They wonder, what’s the point? If this is you, I’m going to call you a follower (for now).

Though Facebook and Twitter share a core function – updating a “status” statement which is shared publicly – the uses for Twitter and Facebook are (I’ve found) different. This is mainly due to the very public broadcasting of tweets vs. the more private, friends-only Facebook environment.

Having stated this, Facebook continues to make changes and options regarding its service. Many of these are Twitter-like, allowing users who wish to have a more public presence the option of broadcasting to a wider audience. However, Facebook’s roots are in connecting offline buddies in the online world. Many, many, many users will continue to use Facebook for this purpose alone. Twitter is identified as a micro-blogging tool and not necessarily a social network. At this stage in its development (and perhaps until more casual users begin using it), Twitter is better for broadening a nexus of people, ideas, and information.

For more on how, keep reading…

What’s a follower to do?

The ever-expanding group of followed Twitter users are “saying” a lot – stories, announcements, tips, links, video, photos, ideas. The scope of what is being shared changes daily but, for example… If you are a dancer, art enthusiast, or music lover, you may want to keep up with the artists and companies you love. More and more are appearing on twitter, keeping fans updated on touring schedules, new works, the creative process, and more. This may also be an opportunity to stay up-to-date, and ask questions, within your field or career of interest. If you are a parent, there is a wealth of tips and links coming from the Twitter mommy community. If you want to keep up with local, international, or even entertainment news there are opportunities to follow TV networks, magazines, newspapers, or (straight to the source) celebrities themselves. Twitter users are also breaking news… as it happens. I read of Michael Jackson’s hospitalization/death via Twitter first and then turned on CNN. Like the Hudson River plane landing, it was one of many instances in which Twitter broke the news. And Twitter users are using the medium in ways never imagined (read about Twitter’s role during the Iran election aftermath). The list goes on… many of your local news reporters are on Twitter!

There are those on Twitter who only ever beat their own drum (the over-promoters), there are opportunistic spammers, there are those who contribute only the most mundane aspects of their life. Fortunately, unfollowing these pitiful Twitterers is as easy as following them… click! You are free to opt-in or opt-out at any time. Should you want to limit or have more control over who sees your tweets, it is possible to keep them private while still following others.

So, what’s a follower to do? How does one find good folks to follow? A good start is to go beyond your e-mail contact list when looking but the Twitter website doesn’t exactly explain how to do this. So, I’m going to…

Try a search for key words or phrases via Twitter Search (also available on your Twitter homepage) or the Google-powered Twitterment, and see who is talking about the topics in which you are interested.

Search the bios and descriptions of Twitter users with Twellow. Like the yellow pages, this is a good way to find local groups and organizations to follow as well. Certain cities are also tracked via CityTweets.

Check out who your friends are following. You can sift through them manually of course but there is also Mr. Tweet, a service that connects the dots for you. It also allows you to recommend (or be recommended by) other Twitter users.

Okay, maybe you aren’t content to be a wallflower. Read on…

Birds of a feather

You may not feel as though you have anything in particular to advocate but there is plenty you have to share. Links to your favorite charities, interesting videos on YouTube, photos and tips from your travels. You may find like-minded individuals via Twitter that you would not have interacted with otherwise.

Or, maybe you really do have something to publicize. If you are job-hunting, you are advocating yourself. If you own a business (even a small, local one), that business could benefit from a presence on Twitter. And in fact, this a chance for say, dance studios to go beyond just schedule changes…

Share links and resources with your students.

Interact with other local tweeters and businesses. There may be “followers” in your community that are looking for what you have to offer. You may make connections that will lead to new opportunities.

Participate and be a valuable member of the online dance community. My network has expanded internationally and it has been amazing (not to mention validating) to connect via Twitter with people all over the world who share the same passion for dance as I.

Should you wish to be follow-worthy, I would say, share material that relays something about who you are. Let your followers in on what you are up to but also highlight the work of others, or something that amuses you, or yes, even those daily bits of life (sometimes these are what ignite a conversation). I tweet more with the people that do these things, though most relationships stay professional in nature. These personal connections which grow before or along-side the strictly-business ones foster good will. This is a method for increasing awareness of your business/expertise that is also fun!

Just remember, Twitter is not a substitute for face-to-face interaction. It is a valuable tool that you can use – don’t let it use you. As with any online network, users should be smart, safe, and savvy.

Giving it a try?

There is a learning curve with Twitter. There is a culture and a shorthand to get to know. There are services which make its use more user friendly. To help you with this, mashable.com has created a useful guide. Should you decide to join Twitter, It is surprising how much you can discover, glean, and communicate in 140 characters or less! Good luck!

Let me know if you have any questions. And come follow me! Ask me questions! Comment on what you’ve read here. I’d be happy to help get you started with some great dance Tweeters to follow!

The dance world's gated community where members of the industry gather. With safety as a priority, parents are assured security for even their young dancers.

In case you haven’t noticed, social networks are all the rage. Since 2002, when MySpace emerged as one of the Internet’s earliest leaders in social networking, interaction online has been focused upon building communities within this vast realm.

One such community focused entirely on dance is Danceregister.com. Though you may not have heard of it yet, the site has been around since 2007. According to Anthony LoCascio, the master teacher and Tap Dogs alum who helms the community, “Danceregister seeks to unify the dance world and to increase the strength of present dance-related entities for a more prolific future of dance in the physical, mental, and digital world.” Based in the Silicon Valley, Danceregister is in an excellent geographic position to investigate, explore, and test online technologies and ideas before they are widely exposed to the public. Therefore, Danceregister is ever-evolving, making use of these new technologies to further their mission, which is to create a positive legacy that represents and makes available, all aspects of the dance studio community in one safe, helpful, user-friendly, positive, like-minded network.

Anthony took some time to talk with me about social networks, Danceregister, and the online dance community.

Dance Advantage: In 2007 you launched Danceregister.com, a “gated social networking community.” Who is Danceregister for?

Anthony LoCascio: Though it was originally created for the safety of dancers, Danceregister ultimately became useful to each individual demographic of the dance industry. Our community is utilized by studio owners, teachers, students, parents, merchants, services, and even other dance-related web sites. It is exclusively ours, exclusively dance!

DA: I understand that parents are notified when their child applies to join Danceregister. That’s a great way to keep parents in the loop about their child’s activity online.

AL: We do send an email to the parent, as well as verification letters to dance studios. We monitor the site personally and have a volunteer “crew” to report anything suspicious in the community. In two years we have had a perfect record when it comes to the safety of our members.

DA: A gated community implies that there are additional security measures that ensure student safety. Are there ways you make certain that only members of the dance community are gathering at Danceregister?

AL: Because nothing in the world is perfect, we use a few methods which act as a checks and balances system. Some we make public and others we keep private. All of this is because of our main goal – safety. No other dance website can claim they are as safe as us.

DA: You are extremely passionate about the subject of online safety and I know that Danceregister was born in part from your concerns about students’ security on MySpace and other networks. What are some of the dangers related to the use of social networking sites?

AL: The idea is not to scare anyone but to educate them on the facts, both good and bad. In addition to personal safety concerns on Myspace and Facebook, there are issues that may result in damage to your computer, the spread of viruses, unauthorized access to accounts, and spam.

Teachers are also quickly learning that by using social networks they expose themselves to a “business mixing with personal life” scenario. Just because they don’t think to search out students online, doesn’t mean students are not searching for them. Plus assistant teachers may not be mature enough to see the damage one posted photo or video can do to a business. Look at Vanessa Hugeness (Disney), past American Idol contestants (Fox) or previous pageant winners (Trump Enterprises). Ask them what one mistake on the net can do to a person or how it can hurt a product or business. Also, studios are their own living, evolving worlds that can contain drama. Danceregister deters drama where a site like Bebo, Myspace, Youtube, or Facebook can easily fuel drama.

DA: So, in your opinion, should dance studios stay away from these larger networks altogether?

AL: When used properly, these sites can be useful. It would be wise to have a studio profile on all Facebook and Linkedin-type sites. These profiles should be used as marketing tools. They should include limited but clear contact info or links to your own studio web site. They should be seen as a way to direct traffic to your own web pages, not to “friend” students and parents. Studios should use these sites primarily for marketing and directing business. Danceregister, with its security measures, is better suited for personal networking and in-studio communication.

DA: Danceregister is free to join, will this always be the case?

AL: With the community currently small enough to control, we will continue to be free of charge. However, with provision of safety, technology, time and exposure comes growth and additional costs. In the future we may charge a nominal fee for a lifetime membership. This is to guarantee each and every parent has knowledge of their younger dancer’s presence in our network. As membership requests become more dense, this fee will help support the site and provide a faster even more efficient verification process. We can project the fee won’t be applied until late 2009 to mid 2010 and that it will be a minimum of $8.95 and not exceed $14.95 plus tax. The goal is to have the least expensive fee for a lifetime so there is no hassle associated with reoccurring fees.

One goal, which is firmly in place and will continue to be a focus, is to charge no fees for studio owners/teachers. However, to keep the site at certain standards, there will be fees for merchants & services in the future. I do not want Danceregister to become inundated with advertisements. We are not a vehicle which plans to rely on advertising. Danceregister has a personal, friendly, positive relationship with its users and represents itself and not other corporations. Any adverts will be limited in quantity and location.

DA: What are some of the things a parent, for instance, might do at Danceregister?

AL: There’s so much to do there. They could check out our forums, get or give advice, write reviews of conventions or competitions, post video, photos, quizzes, polls, and more all in a safe environment. They could consult with master teachers, visit my live chat (which occurs Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 PST), post questions to adjudicators of competitions, share or obtain knowledge of the dance world by reading live news and updates, and develop personal relationships within the global dance community. They could also look up their home studio’s information (each studio is divided into “mini-communities” or subsets), chat live via IM or audio/video with other parents, or have a meeting with a teacher — fewer trips into the studio!

And all of this applies for everyone, not just parents!

DA: In addition to running Danceregister, you are also a teacher. Do you think technology is changing the way we teach or the way students learn?

AL: Dance websites and exposure to individuals and ideas has been excellent for the dance community, as has accessibility and the ability to download instructional videos. I have a Dance4teachers subscriber who takes my tap DVD’s, uploads them to her Mac, and puts them on her ipod touch. Now she can reference them during class right in the palm of her hand. That is a big leap (pun intended) from less than 10 years ago when I was still sending people VHS tapes!

DA: What are some of your favorite resources for dancers and dance educators online?

AL: Early in 1999, when I started my first web site, just4tap.com, dance had a very limited online presence – mostly on forums. Therefore, there is great history on a forum site like dance.net. With blogs gaining recognition over the past few years, they have become the personal voices of the dance community. Tapdanceman, and Danceadvantage are blogs I personally frequent. Danceregister even has a public blog for people who are not part of the private community.

For investigating or developing professional dance gigs, there are sites like sceneinteractive, exploretalent, and many others. For music editing or cutting songs for a performance, there is www.musiceditingonline.com. Plus every dance media outlet now has web representation.

DA: Dance has certainly exploded online recently. How have you seen the Danceregister community grow and change since it began?

AL: When I started Danceregister, I had about 125 members and they were all from my local classes. The major focus of Danceregister was safety and due to the safety issues on MySpace, I chose not to advertise Danceregister directly to the public. Year one was all about working on the best ways to cost effectively provide an environment where it was safe to post videos and photos and chat about dance in a like-minded positive setting. I only used word of mouth to expose the community. That said, we had just over 350 members by the end of the first year.

Now confident in the verification system we had implemented since day one, year two’s focus has included content and exposure. We hit over 1000 members just before our two-year mark and have a great deal of content now on the site. It is time to let people know about Danceregister. Students are having fun, parents have peace of mind, and studios are starting to catch on to the communication benefits of the network. After all this hard work I am determined to get the word out!

DA: Well, I love to point my readers to dance resources online so, I’m happy to help with that part. Can you tell us more about what’s on the horizon for Danceregister?

AL: I am planning a video blog on Danceregister in September. These videos will follow me on an upcoming tour as I return to the stage with Tap Dogs. We are planning a contest also for September. Just a few of the prizes are iPods, Danceregister swag, iTunes®/Napster/Rhapsody gift cards valued from $25 to $50, DVD classes provided by Dance4students, and more. The top prize will be a gift certificate for two concert tickets of your choice. I personally will be present at the Rhee Gold Teacher conference this summer. If you are at the event please feel free to stop by and say hello. Danceregister will have a table in the Exhibit Hall.

TenduTV, a broadband television channel that is delivering live concert dance, documentaries, and dance for camera works to an ever-widening audience.

Because of technology available to us online and in our homes, we are rapidly becoming an “on demand” culture. From a personal computer, a phone, a TV, or iPod, viewers may take in content at their own convenience.

Dance artists and companies are beginning to find ways of making use of this technology, giving audiences that previously may have been out of reach, access to their art.

It is exciting to think that someone on the opposite side of the world can tune in to watch the work of an artist known only on their home turf. And, I find it really thrilling that students unable to attend a live performance due to location or other circumstances have the opportunity to access a work they may never have seen otherwise.

So….

Today I’d like to connect you to TenduTV, a broadband television channel that is delivering live concert dance, documentaries, and dance for camera works to an ever-widening audience. Their videos, many of which show complete (rather than excerpted) contemporary dance works for stage and film, offer excellent opportunities for students to connect with the dance world beyond their own studio.

Live performance video of Robert Battle’s “Overture,” Julie Voshell (from “Movin’ Out”) and Duncan Cooper (see my report on his recent interview here) in Leda Meredith’s “Pair of Jacks,” and works by Jonah Bokaer (which I’ve written about here) are available via TenduTV. There are also several award-winning screendance selections and an inspirational documentary film about the difference dance has made in a London women’s correctional facility. It is not to be missed.

I also want to note that TenduTV is to be commended for working to help dance artists utilize current technology without sacrificing the integrity and copyright protection of their work. I always look forward to the new selections posted on their channel via Sling.com and encourage you to keep your eye on this project. TenduTV is continually finding new spaces and places to broadcast, including millions of home televisions throughout the U.S.

Check out TenduTV’s channel at Sling.com

Just a quick bulletin to let you know that DanceLifeTV will be airing it’s second episode on April 17. For those that don’t know this is a new online project developed by Rhee Gold that features segments created with the dance teacher in mind. I caught Episode One last month and my thoughts are posted here (scroll to the Update section for my mini-review). In a recent newsletter, Rhee Gold and collaborator Mikeal Knight state that they’ve enjoyed the feedback on the first episode. Regarding the next installment they go on to say,

“Our commitment is to make each episode better than the last and we’ve got some really cool segments planned for episode #2 to launch April 17.”

What’s most interesting is that the creators have revealed a bit more about the plan for DanceLifeTV in coming months. Aparently upcoming episodes will feature sort of a video travel log as DanceLifeTV tours North America visiting studios and colleges, and attends special events with the aim of highlighting inspirational people and stories in the dance world.

For those of you who still haven’t taken a look at Episode 1, just visit the website and choose either High or Standard (based on your internet connection) to view the installment. If you’d like to be notified when new episodes are set to premiere, be sure to sign up for their email list.

If you’ve seen Episode 1, why not have a look at the following articles from Dance Studio Life online:

Dance Advantage is celebrating its first birthday!!

One year ago, I added my first official post to Dance Advantage (although, the “welcome, this is my blog” post appeared on April Fool’s Day: 4/1/08). Interestingly enough, it was titled Dance Instructors and the Internet Community and was a response to a post written by Doug Fox at Great Dance called How Dance Instructors Can Use The Internet to Increase Class Sizes and Sell Instructional Videos. In it he suggests an internet strategy for independant dance instructors to essentially market themselves and their classes online. He suggests a blog, Facebook and Myspace pages, as well as regularly creating videos to be shown online and possibly compiled for sale on DVD. It’s interesting stuff and if you’re curious, I suggest you visit his site for details.

My gut response (the post is here), having just come from essentially freelancing as a teacher (within my local area), was “how many teachers have this kind of time?” and concerns of how producing video during class time can be disruptive to the flow of a class. Looking back on the post after a year of participating in the online dance community, I still have some of those same feelings about this particular strategy, though I think it could be very useful for truly independent instructors. However, I have some new thoughts to add about dance instructors in general and how they can use the internet.

First, a few statistics. These were presented in the Did You Know? video I featured in last month’s Role Reversal question:

In 2008 there were 31 billion searches conducted on Google every month. That’s up from 2.7 billion in 2006.

There are over 200 million registered users on MySpace (a little of my own research: Facebook reached over 100 million active users in August 2008, 150 mill. by January 2009 and 175 mill. the following month in February 2009. More than 3 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day (worldwide). Twitter’s numbers are disputed, but I’ve seen ranges from 2.5 to 10 million and I’ve noticed growth in the last month or so as news media and celebrities have joined the conversation. (What is Twitter?? If Facebook is calling someone on the phone, Twitter is the equivilant of text messaging – it is short, fast updating and sharing of information.)

It took radio 38 years to reach a market audience of 50 million. TV – 13 years. Internet – 4 years. iPod – 3 years. Facebook – 2 years.

The number of internet devices in 2008 was 1,000,000,000.

The Point?

Internet searches, now more than ever, are how people are finding information. I, personally, have not cracked open the Yellow Pages in probably 5 years.

Social media is an exploding communication tool and people are spending lots of time at these sites.

The use of internet technologies and websites is rapidly growing.

The Conclusion

Dancers, instructors, schools and studios will benefit from an online presence. Antiquated websites aren’t going to cut it for bringing in new customers who are checking you out online first. While word-of-mouth is still extremely important, people are relying on word-of-mouth found online. Potential customers can learn about you from people they know via social media and they can and will search for the opinions of others elsewhere online. They will look to your site to get an idea of who you are and what you do, if it is outdated they will assume that you are too. If you want customers (current and potential) to find you, to share your site with others, to stay tuned in to what you are doing, make it easy — be where they are, online and off.

The Strategy

You may consider the top three of the following to be most important in my eyes. If you do nothing else, take action in these three areas.

Be the best you can be. Consistently work to improve what you offer and how you offer it. Look for opportunities to learn from others, attend workshops, and take classes. Never stop learning.

Get involved in your local community. Dancers cannot live by internet alone. Support dancers and dance artists in your hometown. Come together with other dance schools and businesses to build awareness about an issue or support a charity. Open the lines of communication between you and others that do what you do. Make giving back a priority. (Yes, I realize that 1 and 2 have little to do with the internet, however I’m not convinced that any amount of internet presence could be more important than these, so I’ve added them first and foremost).

Carve out your own internet space. Create an interesting and useful website. While it is not the only method, blogs are a great way to keep the content on your site fresh, unique, and engaging. Because visitors can easily subscribe to a blog’s RSS feed via email or other means, it is relatively simple to keep your cutsomer base updated. I’m partial to blogs that offer the ability to create static pages in addition to those that change chronologically (I’ve used and would recommend wordpress.com’s free blogging service if you have little site-building knowledge but would like to handle the project yourself. Up until about a week ago, Dance Advantage was a wordpress.com blog.)

Consider extending this online presence to social media sites, particularly MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. I’ve written about Facebook privacy settings for profiles here, but look for additional information detailing how teachers and studios might make use of Facebook and Twitter soon on Dance Advantage. Meanwhile, Doug Fox has written some wonderful posts regarding ways dance artists can enhance their online presence and many of his thoughts and tips apply for teachers and studios as well. Click here to discover a nice collection of his work.

Do make use of online video and photo posting. As a teacher, your students come first (Don’t sacrifice their class experience for self-marketing purposes. And, please be sensitive in the use of images of young students online.) In the comments of Doug’s aforementioned post, Carl Nelson, offers that some studios (like this swing dance studio) post videos reviewing material learned in class. In children’s classes or other forms that have a syllabus this could be a great tool for students’ home practice and (as stated) “functional marketing.” Compiling short videos and providing photos that give a glimpse of special events, classes, performances, or perhaps customers offering thoughts on what makes you/your school special, will create some dynamic content for your website and, when added to YouTube or Flickr (for example), have a wider reach.

Utilize your current customer base to do some of the work for you (in more ways than one). If you make shareable content easily accessible to your students (and/or their parents), you’ve increased your chances of growing through word-of-mouth. All of the sites mentioned above make it easy to spread and share information but you’ve got to have a presence there to make use of it. Also, literally, let others do some of the work. Particularly in a studio situation, parents and students are a great resource. I’m sure you are using their skills for lots of things already, why not investigate ways they might support you in creating an online presence as well? Find someone that’s handy with their home video editing equipment. Find a budding photographer to record moments during classes or events. Find someone (or a few someones) who might like to keep content on your site up to date. If you are an independent instructor, don’t discount your student base and perhaps even enlist friends and relatives to do some of the dirty work.

I have some theories about why dancers and dance teachers are slow to adapt and adopt technology in regard to their livlihood. One of the biggest obstacles, I know, is that as a teacher your time is limited. You may work multiple jobs and if you’re fortunate enough to teach full-time or run your own studio, I know that the schedule alone is enough to keep you on your toes. Believe me, I’ve been there. My advice is to just take one thing at a time, adding and learning new things when and where you can. The benefits to time spent improving yourself, reaching out to your community, and expanding that community to an ever-growing online population will be worth it.

Become a fan of Dance Advantage on Facebook.

Follow me on Twitter.

Visit Dance Advantage on MySpace.

Do you think dance instructors and studios are representing themselves well on the internet?

Are you expanding your presence online? Why or why not?

What else would you add to the strategy?

UPDATE!!! I was able to watch now that they have it up on dancelifetv.com. Here are a few of my thoughts. I encourage you to add your own in the comments below this post.

Just a quick update to let you know that Rhee Gold’s DanceLifeTV, which I wrote about in an earlier post, will premiere in just a short while – 4pm E.S.T. to be exact. Few details about what the first episode will contain, how the information will be presented, or how often episodes will air have been released but I guess we can find out together! I suspect that if you miss Episode #1, it will be showing at the site for a period of time. Stay tuned for some of my thoughts on this new resource. I look forward to hearing yours!

UPDATE!!!

UPDATE!!!

UPDATE!!!

After having some internet issues during the original airing of this webisode, I was able to watch now that they have it up on dancelifetv.com. Here are a few of my thoughts. I encourage you to add your own in the comments below this post.

Where the Magic Happens

This, it seems, will be a regular segment spotlighting dance studios located throughout the U.S. In the premiere episode the studio featured is none other than The Gold Studio in Brockton, Massachusetts. It’s a heartwarming piece that gives some insight into the Gold philosophy of dance education which has much to do with fostering self-confidence, integrity, and dedication through dance.

Mrs. Complains A’lot

A humorous take on dance parents that most any teacher or studio owner can appreciate, this segment is cute and far from mean-spirited. It’s that little slice of truth that will make teachers nod their heads and chuckle at the comments and questions we field on a regular basis. What else is there to do but laugh, really?

Ask Rhee

A feature in DanceStudioLife Magazine, Rhee answers questions sent to him by readers. Once again, the core values of the Gold philosophy come through in this suggested response to stolen choreography.

Behind the Scenes of Costume-Making

I have to say I’d never thought about what goes into pumping out thousands of dance costumes come recital time each year. In this piece we get a look at the inner workings of the Dansco costume factory.

Danspirations

Dance teachers are special people and this segment will remind you why (in case you’ve forgotten or need to take a moment to recognize and appreciate the job that you do).

A Lifetime of Dance

Celebrating a lifetime of dance and a long teaching career, Georgia Deane, will be 90 years old in June. I hope I look that good at 90. Perhaps her love for teaching and for dance have kept her young. Georgia seems to think so: “Everyone should dance. It keeps everything moving in your body so you don’t expire.”

My Thoughts

DanceLife TV reflects the focus of Rhee Gold’s mission in the dance world. A positive and encouraging voice, these videos give a little morale boost to hard-working teachers. At 20-or so minutes, the video might be nice to wind down with at the end of a difficult day at the studio. So far, the content is not offering tools that will specifically help you in the craft of teaching or in the tasks at your studio but rather stories that will give you the lift you need to soldier on and remind you why it is you teach in the first place. I’ll be curious to see if future episodes contain more information that teachers can act upon in the classroom or in the running of their business because, ultimately, I think this is what will keep busy people coming back for each webisode.
