Houston Ballet apprentice, Madison Morris answers questions about what it's like to perform in the corps during this busy holiday season. She reveals both the hard work and dedication required of apprentices and the corps and an insider's view of the sometimes action-packed events going on behind the scenes at Nutcracker performances.

Like most ballet companies, Houston Ballet has a long-standing Nutcracker tradition. And so, the production and its elements are woven into the fabric of the company culture. When new members enter the community, I imagine them as threads, being absorbed into the warp and woof.

Madison Morris; Photo by AMitava Sarkar

For a company apprentice like Madison Morris, already a part of the wider Houston dance community before entering the Houston Ballet Academy as a youth, Ben Stevenson’s production of The Nutcracker must feel truly etched in the consciousness.

Though born in Charlotte, NC, Madison moved to Dallas with her family just after her first birthday. In any other locale, one might be considered a native in this case but, this is Texas. So, quoting what is possibly the state’s most popular fridge magnet, Madison mentions, “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!”

At four, she and her family moved to Houston where her mother enrolled her at Woodlands Civic Ballet. “For seven years, I trained as both a ballerina and a competitive gymnast. In February 2005, I auditioned and was accepted into Houston Ballet’s Summer Intensive Program as a Level 3/Level 4 dancer. After three full years training in Houston Ballet Academy and two years in Houston Ballet II (HBII), I am now enjoying dancing professionally with Houston Ballet,” she explains.

The Corps Experience

While each dancer performs many roles throughout the Nutcracker run, each learns even more than they will perform. Madison has been charged with knowing eleven corps de ballet roles for this production. She will perform eight of them throughout the season’s 34 shows.

Madison took time-out from her busy schedule to answer a few of my questions about what it’s like to perform in the corps during this busy holiday season. She reveals both the hard work and dedication required of apprentices and the corps and an insider’s view of the sometimes action-packed events going on behind the scenes at Nutcracker performances.

Dance Advatage: Describe the preparation and rehearsal process for The Nutcracker.

Madison Morris: In October, while rehearsing for other current or future productions, it’s typical to be called to different Nutcracker rehearsals as well. We begin to learn, or freshen our memories, on our assigned parts. From this point forward , we strive to perfect our execution of the choreography. Then, in early November, Nutcracker rehearsals kick into full swing. In addition to dancing, learning a piece commonly involves reviewing recorded performances from previous years.

Madison Morris; Photo by Jim Caldwell

DA: What is your approach to staying healthy during this time?

MM: The same arsenal of common sense I attempt to employ year round. I eat a well-balanced diet and take vitamins to fuel my body. Also, Vitamin C, Fish Oil and B-12 to boost my immune system, as needed. The moment I feel a sore throat begin, I have learned taking a Mushroom Complex supplement wards it off.

Hydration helps me through hectic training times, too. In addition to water, I drink coconut water. It is more natural than a sports drink, low in calories, and it is loaded with Vitamin C, electrolytes, and potassium. It even beats bananas! My two favorite flavors are mango and pink guava.

I keep water or coconut water on hand at all times and I make sure to eat protein. I don’t always have time for a meal, so snacks are really important. I enjoy pumpkin seeds, cocoa almonds, cashews, and trail mixes. I also love fresh and dried fruits.

DA: You’ll have lots of dual performance days during the run. What do you do in between a matinee and evening show?

MM: I look forward to resting and refueling myself between shows. I usually pack a dinner or go back home to grab a bite to eat. Occasionally, a group of us venture out for a coffee or quick bite.

DA: Which roles are you cast in for this season’s Nutcracker?

MM: Mirliton, Columbine Doll, Flower, Snowflake, Ginger Legs, and three different mothers in the party scene.

DA: Is it a challenge sometimes to remember what you are doing, and when? Are there any tricks to keeping it all straight?

MM: Yes, it can prove challenging to keep the roles separate in your mind. One year, throughout the run of shows, I performed two different snowflake spots, which were on completely opposite ends of the stage at one moment, and then directly beside each other the next.

I think it is far easier to separate choreography in your mind, and body, if they are on opposite sides of the stage, because your body can recognize the parts as distinctly different. At one point in the snowflakes dance there is a ripple effect down the “snowbank” of dancers. The year I performed these two snowflakes spots, I either moved on count one or count two. Since they were directly next to each other spatially and in timing, I always had to make sure to focus on that section to ensure my muscle memory would not lapse into the other part.

One thing I find helpful for keeping multiple parts straight is to simply write out the different roles on paper.

DA: Which is your favorite role to dance?

MM: I love the music and choreography of Houston Ballet’s Waltz of the Flowers. The movements feel very natural and are a joy to dance as you flow with the music and attempt to consume the stage. The flowing choreography, with the corps de ballet dressed in yellow and green romantic tutus, subtly reminds me of a garden full of the “Yellow Rose of Texas.” This year, I am also looking forward to performing as the Columbine Doll in Act I and as a Mirliton in Act II.

The Rat Stanley Project -- Click the photo to learn more about or participate in this fun photo initiative by Houston Ballet

DA: Is it difficult to give a fresh performance each time?

MM: I find taking it one show at a time and remembering that each audience deserves a great performance motivates me to keep it lively. Though the choreography and music are unchanged from show to show, the one fresh factor remains the viewers. An audience’s enthusiasm can fill the theatre and fuel the dancers with energy.

DA: Okay, every ballet dancer I know has one: What’s your funny Nutcracker story?

MM: My funniest Nutcracker memory involves rushing to fill an empty spot last year in the battle scene in which the girls portray rats and boys act as toy soldiers.

Not cast as a rat for this particular show, I was preparing for and focusing on my role in flowers. When the rats left the basement dressing room to join the battle scene, there was one rat costume still hanging unused. Out of those of us available, who instantly realized there was a rat “missing in action,” I was the only one in pointe shoes who might have had a prayer of making it in time to go on stage.

Immediately, HBII teamwork saved the day. While I tore the flowers headpiece off my head, one friend grabbed the rat tail harness, another got the body suit, and still another secured the helmet/mask. As my friends helped me dress in record time, another HBII deduced I needed to fill the #6 rat spot, which I had never done before. I, literally, ran down the Wortham (Center) basement halls, up the stairs, and around the back of the stage to join the other rats as they entered the scene.

Once on stage, I was clueless on the specifics of rat #6 throughout the battle. Thankfully, somehow my toy soldier with whom I was to “fight” was notified of the sudden substitute filling his rat partner’s costume. He was able to drag me through the scene. The funniest moment, for me, occurred near the end of the battle. As the scene drew to a close the rat king died, and I started to let out slight sighs of relief. Then, suddenly I wondered if rat #6 was to help carry the king safely off stage?!? It would not do to have a dead rat king laying on stage during the snowflake scene.

Needless to say, relief flooded me once I arrived back in the dressing room. As it turned out, the missing rat was actually in the building, but forgot she was assigned this performance.

Great story, Madison!

Silly question, you’re here aren’t you!?

Do you like to draw?

I didn’t ask if you were a da Vinci, Dali, or Degas. I’m not, but I still love to draw.

Artist or doodler, I want to encourage you to channel a dash of that ‘Eddie’ Degas style, and do some good. Enter your dance drawing for The ICON of Hope Project, a nationwide drawing contest.

The ICON of Hope Project

A fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The ICON of Hope Project is an initiative of ICON Dance Complex, a New Jersey dance studio owned and operated by siblings GEO and Beth Hubela, and their ICON of The Year, Katie Fasbach.
First, your masterpiece:

Create a dance portrait of any kind, genre, or setting on 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper with the title ICON of HOPE. No other words please, as this message is important.

Good news for me; stick figures are acceptable! So are markers, glitter, and crayon.

Make sure your name, age, email and phone number are on the back.

Then, check this page for where and how to mail it in.

More good news; submit as often as you like. Please send a $5 donation with each drawing. Your donation, says Beth Hubela, “will go directly towards our annual St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital holiday check.” She adds, “We invite you to help make a collaborative and positive impact by sending us your best dance scene.”

Really important: You have until December 2nd to get your drawings in. So hurry!

An Interactive Vision of Hope

Way cooler, even, than supporting a great cause is that your drawings will be presented in a video montage to the patients of St. Jude during the holidays to convey an interactive vision of hope. The video, which will include a heartfelt solo by SYTYCD Season 5 finalist, Karla Garcia and songs by ICON recording artists, will also be featured online where it can be shared across social networks.

The drawings will also be on display at the ICON Holiday Gala in December and at the Monmouth County Library, Marlboro, NJ in January. ONE lucky winner’s design will become the 2010 promotional holiday card for ICON Dance Complex.

I know you’ve probably heard of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the incredible work they do for children facing and fighting cancer and other threatening diseases. You may not know that Danny Thomas, the late entertainer, founded the hospital in the 1960′s because of a promise.
Behind the request of dance fans to draw and donate for The ICON of Hope Project is eleven-year-old, Katie Fasbach. She’s the reigning ICON of The Year, a very special title bestowed upon her by her teachers and mentors at ICON Dance Complex. But, as you’ll see in my interview with Katie, the honor is way more than just a title.

Dance Advantage: First of all, a belated congratulations on being named Icon of the Year, Katie! What makes this honor so special to you?

Katie Fasbach: I am so honored to be named ICON of the Year. Geo and Beth Hubela are the most amazing dancers ever, and I’m so thankful that they awarded me with such an honor. Knowing that Geo, Beth, and their family felt that I had the qualities in me to represent ICON truly means the world to me. I have so much for respect for all of them. Anyone who meets them totally feels the same. To be chosen by them, out of over 600 students, is truly heartfelt.

DA: I’m sure you’ve been busy in the last few months. So far, what kind of opportunities and events have you been able to participate in as a result of being named Icon of The Year?

KF: As ICON of the Year, I have had the amazing opportunity to have my first ever blog. We have so many cool events and opportunities from ICON, that it is quite easy to write about. For example, we did a “flash mob” at the Freehold Mall to help support the less fortunate in our neighborhood. Everyone brought a pair of new or slightly used jeans to the mall as a donation. I donated 27 pairs! Overall, we accumulated over 500 pairs of jeans. Then we all danced a flash mob and it was awesome. We took tons of pictures, and I even got to sign some autographs! I had sooo much fun. This is just one of the many amazing opportunities that Geo and Beth offer to their students at ICON. I loved being a part of this!

DA: As ICON of The Year, what other projects or duties will you have throughout the year?

KF: Being ICON of the Year, I am looking forward to a few fundraisers that I have brainstormed with Geo and Beth. I am hoping to run ICON’s First Annual Golf Tournament this spring, with the hope that some of the proceeds go to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. I also have a few other unique ideas, but I don’t want to give away any of the surprises!

DA: Do you like to draw?

KF: I LOVE to draw! For the past two years, I participated in the Talented and Gifted program for Art at school. I truly enjoy it, and always have. I’m so excited to see the entries for the ICON of Hope project!

DA: In addition to raising funds, the drawings are also an opportunity to bring some Holiday cheer to the children of St. Jude’s. What’s your favorite part of the holidays?

KF: I am looking forward to this holiday season. I have a very close family, and we make so many memories during the holidays. I love having off from school, and hanging with my friends; shopping, dancing, sleep-overs. I can’t wait!

For the past few years, my friends and I have visited the nursing homes in the area and sang holiday songs for them. The senior citizens loved it. Maybe this year I can set it up, and we can dance for them. That would be so much fun! The seniors don’t get to get out much, so visiting them means so much to them. We have some amazing routines, I’m sure they would be delighted.

DA: As a blogger myself, I’m excited that you are given the opportunity to blog and write about your experiences throughout the year. What do you think of blogging?

I love doing the blog and always want to spend a lot of time on it. Unfortunately, my schoolwork had interfered. For some reason, my teachers this year feel the need to give our class tons of homework. Between homework and dance, it is often hard to find the extra time to keep up blogging.

I love updating and organizing pictures for the blog. I wish I could just blog all day, but unfortunately, it is not possible.

See what Katie and ICON Dance Complex are up to on the ICON of the Year blog.

Thanks Katie, and ICON Dance Complex, for a great initiative.

I hope you’ll support a fabulous cause, share your creativity with some super special kids, and submit your dance drawing today!

Halloween time is exciting for children and with a little focus and extra preparation it can open up creative possibilities. It can a starting off point for your students to let their imaginations fly like a magic broomstick soaring around the moon!

I love Halloween but not because of the candy. Just driving around town watching ghosts hanging from trees spinning and swinging in the wind makes me giddy. The flow of a vampire’s cape, the flop of big clown feet and the sheer beauty of a green faced witch makes me want to jump and shout! There is no better time to explore costumes, props and make-up with children then during the Halloween season. Since we all learn from our experiences, Halloween can be a great jumping off point because most kids will be experiencing some form of dress-up and your job as a teacher is to take their budding experience and run with it!

Materials are endless, and examples are everywhere. Creating a mood or feeling can always be accentuated with the addition of props, costumes and make-up. Young kids love this and they are never too young to explore these elements. Focusing the Halloween energy on the art of dance is a great way to harness Halloween hyperness! And you might see your students demonstrate new ways of moving and creating as well.

Exploring Fabric

Bring in some old sheets, or buy some inexpensive fabric at your local fabric store. Leave it in the center of the room and when the students come in see what they discover about the material. Let this be a child directed activity so instead of you telling them what to do see what they discover.

Some questions to prompt them:

How can you make the fabric move?

Is it heavy or light?

How many children can make the material move? Can it move with just one child? Can the entire class work together to make it move?

Is it easier to make it move fast or slow?

Can you make it move around the room?

What else can you do with the fabric?

How can it cover you? Can you stick different body parts out of the fabric?

Can you move the material with different body parts?

If you have the availability of a video camera take some video of them so they can watch the fabric “come to life” and have a dance of its own. (If not, pictures would be great.)

Make-Up

This time of year, kid’s make-up is readily available. It comes in sticks (almost like crayons) or in little plastic containers with a brush (very similar to a paint brush.) When doing make-up on students make sure you get the permission of the parents beforehand and that the students are not wearing their favorite outfits! Cold cream, tissues, and water are a must. And a mirror for the kids to see the final results! Maybe you will find that a parent is a talented face painter and will help out with the transformations. You do not need to be an artist to create masterpieces on the children – just a few well placed whiskers or wrinkles will do the trick! You might want to keep to a theme like animals or have the children pick what they want. Then have them create a dance based on the movements of their characters.

Before the dance ask the students:

What is your character?

How does your character get around? Walk, crawl, fly, slither, leap, etc.

Do they move quickly or slowly?

Do they take up a lot of space or a little space?

Do they like to be near other animals or creatures?

What is there mood? Happy, sad, scared, angry?

Pick out different pieces of music and have the class vote on which music they want to dance to. Maybe all similar creatures should dance together or it might be interesting to have opposites dance together!

Pull out that video camera or camera again. You will be amazed at how the children’s movements will change when they are creating a character and are not being themselves. It definitely helps for children who are inhibited.

These activities might take more than one class to complete. There is no rule that each lesson should take one class period. You might do the make-up one day (taking pictures of each child at the end) and the next week explore the movements with the pictures as a reminder of the wonderful characters that were developed. You might see that the class wants more than one day to explore that fabric or that they want to revisit the lesson after seeing the video of themselves. Lessons can be repeated and should be because kids learn from repetition.

Halloween time is exciting for children and with a little focus and extra preparation it can open up creative possibilities. It can a starting off point for your students to let their imaginations fly like a magic broomstick soaring around the moon!

Why not make Valentine's Day an event in your studio?
Here are a few lovely ideas!

Is Valentine’s Day only for sweethearts?

No. Some might consider it just a “Hallmark Holiday” but Valentine’s Day remains an opportunity to show appreciation for and celebrate our friends, family, and loved ones. With the exception of ballroom or social dance schools, it’s not typically a holiday that gets much attention at dance studios… a candy heart here, a Valentine for the teacher there…

Why not make Valentine’s Day an event in your studio?

Here are a few lovely ideas!

Have students bring a parent (or two) to class. It is a great way to wrap parent observation (often held around this time of year anyway) and dance parent appreciation together with a sweet theme. After all, we love our dance parents!

A parent could even participate in class. A “My heart belongs to Daddy” theme may get the fathers to join in! If you’ve got a class of girls, you might want to check out my list of father/daughter songs.

Bring a friend to class. This is a fun marketing idea that many studios have adopted. Students get to bring a friend to their class to share their favorite activity, their friends get a taste of your class or school, and studios may enjoy a few extra customers when all is said and done. On Valentine’s Day the focus doesn’t have to be on “sweethearts” though high school students may get a kick out of bringing significant others. Try some fun partnering or mirroring activities. After all, two hearts are better than one!

Speaking of partnering… If you don’t have time to create your own event around the holiday. Why not make your class extra special with some fun mirroring activities for young children or a partnering class for the older ones. I love this idea for a Dynamic Friendship Dance from Stacey at Leaping Legs!

Hold an open class. Take a cue from your social-dancing cousins. An open class could be held during an evening of the week that you wouldn’t normally have class. Make it something accessible and appealing to males and females of all ages, like an introductory Hip Hop class. Open it to the community. If it’s an adult class, bill it as a great date night. If it’s for kids, just make it fun. If you think you may fill up, hold more than one class. Consider it an open house for people to ask questions or get more information about your school. Get volunteers from your studio to decorate for the holiday and serve refreshments!

These are just a few ideas – do you have one to share?

Does your studio do something special for Valentine’s Day?

If you have a song or album you’re just dying to share, let us know about it in the comments below!

Many of us recycle at home but forget about our workplace. Collect plastic, aluminum, glass, paper, and cardboard if you can. If there is no collection for your area or facility, check into possible drop-off sites and mobilize teachers, parents, and students to see that it gets there.

Consider recycling CDs and cases, as well! With music going completely digital there are probably a lot of these lying around the studio, not to mention all of the burned CDs that get made and tossed. Check this article for ideas about Where to Recycle CD and DVD Cases or try http://www.cdrecyclingcenter.com.

2. Turn Off Lights and Office Machines

Encourage students and staff to turn off lights whenever the studios, bathrooms, or offices are not in use. If your space has the option, try using only half of the lights available or installing dimmer switches. And, replace bulbs,as they burn out with energy-efficient ones.

Also, shut down computers and other office equipment when not in use, purchasing Energy Star labeled devices when you can.

3. Avoid Air Conditioning

Embrace the sweat and resist the urge to immediately snap on the A/C on hot days. Check out this article in Dance Teacher about Choosing the Right Temperature for Your Studio. And, don’t forget to remind students to stay hydrated!

4. Reduce Water Bottle Waste

Speaking of hydration, I know that some of you probably sell bottled water at your studio. However, it’s a no-brainer that all that waste is a real downside. Consider providing filtered water and/or encouraging students to bring a refillable from home. Perhaps you could sell containers with the studio logo to make up for not selling bottled water.

5. Reduce Water Use

Consider installing low-flow toilets or using the ol’ brick-in-the-tank method. Plus, do your best to keep up with maintenance of dripping faucets.

6. Go Paperless

In this age of technology, going paperless isn’t as difficult as it seems. Studios are beginning to move newsletters and other communications online. From increased communication through a studio blog to interacting with customers on your studio’s Facebook page or group, technology is making it much easier to go paperless. In fact, the free teleseminar that I am involved with at DanceStudioOwner.com will include discussion about how to transition your registration and billing systems online. This event begins TODAY with yours truly kicking things off. The topics are so timely, please don’t miss it. Update: Obviously this teleseminar is over but all the interviews and discussions are still available to members at DanceStudioOwner.com. In addition, the download of my interview with Suzanne on how a studio blog can boost your business is free to download when you subscribe to Dance Advantage.

7. Print Wisely

When you must print, use both sides of the paper whenever possible, use the back sides of old documents for faxes, drafts, etc, use the draft setting on your printer when you can, and consider recycling your ink cartridges or toner.

8. Carpool

Start a carpool network. We live in a fast-paced world but students are very conscious of environmental issues. Consider tapping this resource and challenge your students to come up with a plan for organizing the car pool (or to brainstorm more green ideas for the studio). You might be surprised at their willingness to embrace your efforts in this area. However, if you want to go that extra mile, consider offering some incentive with a discount or coupons to those who participate in an organized carpool.

9. Set Up a Gently Used Consignment or Trading List

Young dancers grow out of dancewear and shoes constantly and prices for brand new stuff can get expensive. Again, mobilize your customer base and work together to create a system in which students/parents can offer used items for resale or trade. Frugal parents will thank you.

10. Community Clean-Up

Adopt a highway or join other community clean-up efforts. This is great for your city and the environment. Additionally, showing an interest in your local region is good for business.

11. Buy Organic, Recycled, and Eco-Friendly Products

From the snacks you offer, to the paper towels you use, to the cleaning products you put on your floors, there are plenty of options for going green. Check TheGreenOffice.com or Amazon Green for electronics, lighting, and cleaning supplies (not to mention digital music and now books).

Speaking of Amazon, you might be interested in knowing that they also offer a trade-in program for DVDs, video games, electronics, and for you college students, text books. I’ve not tried this myself as we have a local business that buys back media. If you don’t, or if you are upgrading to blu-ray, Amazon may be an option.

12. Say No to Faux

Nothing brightens up a space like real, growing things. Consider bringing live plants into your studio environment to cool, humidify, and refresh the air.

What are some ways your studio is “going green?”

What are the pros and cons of the above 12 steps?

I’m looking forward to your thoughts and input!

I began Dance Advantage in April of 2008. It has been a great eight months and quite a learning process for me. When I began I knew next to nothing about blogs or blogging. This has been a year of learning, watching, reading, writing, trial-and-error, hard work, and TIME (lots of time)! I’ve tweaked the look and the layout of this blog. I’ve tried all kinds of social media forms. And I’ve gotten a really good response from readers and other bloggers. So, I’d like to take a moment to say thank you to a few people/websites that have been a great help.

Goals for 2009

I have many goals for Dance Advantage but I thought I’d let you in on the biggest one. Plans are already in motion for making the switch from WordPress.com to WordPress.org. For readers who have no idea, this means that I will have more control over the look and design of the blog, which will translate into a new look and layout, new features, options for navigating the posts, and more. I am very excited about this transition as I believe it will support my mission to provide a quality and useful resource for those involved in dance education.

If you are a regular reader of the blog, I encourage any suggestions or feedback that will improve this site. I’d love to hear from you!

To all of you visiting this, my first post in 2009, I want to wish you a wonderful, prosperous, and…

The holiday season is, of course, a busy one for everyone. I wanted to let everyone know that I will be taking a little break from writing new material for the blog until after the new year. In addition to my duties as a mom, which will keep me quite busy throughout this time, I have some other writing projects in the works, and I have decided that as the blog has grown I need use this time to organize my writing and posting habits. Streamlining my process will not only be beneficial for my home life, but allow me to bring you the best possible content here at Dance Advantage. From now until the New Year I will be doing some re-posting of older articles which may be new to readers who have recently discovered the blog, as well as sharing occassional news and events stories that may be of interest to you.

I will not be disappearing completely. You can still find me on Twitter and other places around the net.

Decisions, Decisions

Parents often agonize each year about what to get for the vast number of people that work among, care for, and interact with their children on a regular basis. School teachers, coaches, dance instructors, den mothers, classroom aides, daycare workers, on and on and on!

If you are a parent wrestling with what to get your son or daughter’s dance teacher, you will have to decide how to spend (or not spend) your money this year. Who to give to, what to give, and how much to give are personal decisions each family must make. It is my opinion, however, that less is almost always more. I’ve heard over and over that people are concerned with the amount of clutter in their lives and in their home. Yet, often out of obligation, we add to our stress and our stuff during the holidays. Givers feel exasperated and overwhelmed, but remember that those receiving may also be feeling overrun by gifts. I can’t offer any hard and fast rules about gifting at the holidays, however, I will suggest that simplicity can be a gift to yourself and others. Perhaps keeping this in mind will help to reduce your stress and guide you in your choices.

The Low-Down on Loot

Teachers, especially, get a lot of stuff at the holidays, particularly candles, mugs, and bath/body products. These are great, but one runs out of places and opportunities to use these. As a dance teacher, I appreciate edible treats (healthy snacks like granola or trail mixes are very thoughtful) but remember that it is not always safe to assume that everyone will appreciate food items. For those with allergies or special diet concerns, holiday treats often go to waste. In addition to treats, I prefer items that are small, personal (something obviously purchased with the recipient in mind), consumable (movie passes, coupons, certificates), or handmade by my students (like cards, jewelry, or artwork). Holiday ornaments and decorations were nice when I was a young teacher and didn’t have a lot of my own yet, but now that I have been teaching for a number of years I’ve amassed plenty of these.

If you are planning on spending a bit of cash for a dance teacher (perhaps one that you really think is special or has made extra effort for your child), gift cards or certificates are usually well received. I know that sometimes it feels like $5 is too little for a gift card, however, I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t appreciate that bit of extra pocket money. Just keep in mind what type of card you are buying. If the items in the shop cost well over the amount on the card, the recipient may end up spending money that they otherwise would not have just to make use of the card. Choose a card for an establishment which you know the teacher frequents. For example, a coffee shop, the eatery near the dance studio where he/she grabs dinner on the run between classes, a dancewear shop, bookstore, or music site like iTunes®.

Alternative Gift Ideas

Rather than individual gifts, a class can consider organizing a collective gift for a teacher. This cuts down on the amount of individual items given and ultimately can result in a more useful or meaningful gift. A collective gift does not need to cost a lot of money. The class can work together on making a scrapbook, card, or craft with a holiday theme. Each member of the class could take a turn cleaning the studio mirrors or staying a few minutes after the last lesson to assist with tidying the studio. Get creative!

Another alternative gift idea that is becoming more popular is making a donation in someone’s name. This type of giving/getting is not for everyone. Some are for donation gifts and some are against the idea. You may want to consider if this gift is right for the recipient. If you have a creative way of telling someone that you’ve made a donation in their name, be sure to tell us about it in the comments for this post. Typically the gift recipient receives a card or note about the charity to inform them of the contribution made in his/her name. Another suggestion is to buy/make a small item that is a representation of the charity (for instance, a school-themed magnet for an educational charity).

Something to consider if you receive an abundance of gifts each year is to ask others to donate in lieu of a present. Teachers could hand out a card or note prior to the holiday season and encourage those who would like to give a gift to donate to an organization instead. Providing a short list of charities from which to choose will ensure that both you and the donor are happy about where the money (or item) is going. Changing the Present is one online not-for-profit site on which you can set up a registry/wish list, letting others know you’d welcome a donation made in your name.

The Thought That Counts

More important that gift-giving or receiving, the holidays are a great time to say thank you to the people who spend time with and care for you or your kids in all of their activities. These folks deserve a show of appreciation but saying “thank you” with money or stuff isn’t necessary. I’m going to write that again… Teachers, caregivers, and the people who spend time with you or your kids deserve your thanks but do not need money or stuff to feel appreciated. If they did, they would probably not have chosen a career working with children! Have your kids take the time to write or decorate a card/note and offer your sincere thanks for their time, care, and energy. For most, this gesture of appreciation will be worth more than any thing you could give! Here are some tips to help you or your child write the perfect “thank you” note.

So what are your thoughts?

Do you give teachers gifts at all? (I know some schools have a policy discouraging this)

What types have you given in the past?

What are you planning to give this year?

Do you make homemade gifts, crafts, or other creative presents? Post your ideas in the comments!

We are well into November already and the holidays are quickly approaching. Unless you are a last-minute shopper, you may already be thinking about what to get for the dancer or dance teacher in your life. I’ve found some fun products online that would be a treat for any dancer-type this holiday season. These are primarily gifts that cost more than $10 each. I will cover low-cost gifts that students can give to their dance teachers in my next post.

It’s in the Bag!

It’s not always easy to find dance accessories suitable for boys. Horizon Dance has a variety of dance bags suitable for young girls or teachers. This sling backpack would work for young men – rare, unfortunately.

A Dream Come True

For little girls with big dreams. Check out these pillow cases from Bunnies and Bows and You Go Girl Dancewear.

Charmed I’m Sure

Some dancers get a little Nutcracker crazy around the holidays. For the collector who has everything, here are some unusual and/or rare finds. Also included are three performance DVDs with a slightly different take on the Nutcracker story.

Raise the Barre

Perhaps all your dancer wants for Christmas is his/her own space to practice. Portable floors are available for tap dancers. And, here are some tips for what to look for in a ballet barre (article provides links to three major retailers, here is another). Please note that it is not safe to “teach oneself” pointe, this should always be done with the guidance of a skilled teacher. In fact, it is best to develop most dance skills under the eye of a trained teacher and ask for their suggestions as to what can or should be practiced outside of class.

Happy Shopping!

I hope you enjoy this list and maybe even find some great gifts for the dancer in your life (or for yourself)! I want to note that I am receiving nothing in return for listing these products, I just thought it would be fun to share some of the fun things one can get online with my readers. I cannot speak to the quality of the products or the retailer. Therefore, please practice safe and smart shopping online! Check out these tips. Or, this quick guide.
