With its STEEZ portable audio system (or "boombox") Pioneer is revitalizing a breed of music player that seems nearly extinct, yet still has use and meaning in the dance community. Storing your digital music in 4GB of memory this line offers dance-specific features like tempo control, music cues, and dance battle mode. Dance Advantage reviews the mid-sized Duo model.

The “boombox,” the first of which appeared in the 1970′s, reached its peak in sales and mass appeal during the early 80′s.

But, by the latter half of that decade the boombox (or ghetto blaster) was already on its way out as consumer interest began veering more and more toward personal, handheld devices. Yes, I had a Walkman, kids!

To most in this age of MP3 players and smart phones, the idea of a boombox might seem downright antiquated…

save for one particular population: dancers!

For crews and street performers, a box that can deliver is a must.

And if you’re a traveling teacher who has ever had to make do with tiny speakers, plugged into an iPod, in a large room full of talkative teenagers, you know the value of a subwoofer!

I’ve lugged around a portable CD/cassette player with detachable speakers to all kinds of rehearsal spaces and even classes and performances in unconventional locations (with unacceptable audio systems).

Enter the Pioneer STEEZ, a line of digital-age blasters, designed specifically with dancers in mind!

STEEZ Solo (top), Duo (center), and Crew (bottom)

The good folks at Pioneer, a company long associated with electronics and audio, allowed me to test drive the Duo, one of three models in this line.

Dance-specific features of all three include:

tempo control that doesn’t affect the pitch,

the ability to create custom cues in the music on the fly,

an 8-beat skip,

a non-stop mix option, complete with transition effects and beat matching,

an audio boost to intensify the beat,

an automatic Battle Mode, complete with voice prompts and countdown,

and the ability to activate these controls via a remote.

Now, before my contemporary teachers start to squee, let’s be clear that the true target consumers for this product are b-boys/girls and dance crews.

Still, a portable box that does all that with your digital music files (no CDs necessary), plus includes a dock for your iPod or iPhone? Pretty cool.(...)

GIVEAWAY! How much do you really know about columnist Lauren Warnecke? In this interview she reveals her artistic side, shares some Kickstarter advice, and gives away her pin-up calendar to 4 lucky winners.

Our columnist, Lauren Warnecke has been writing at Dance Advantage for almost 2 years on the Cecchetti Method, muscles, bones, injury, ballet terminology, and more.

So you know a lot about her… but you don’t know ALL about her!

©Kelly Rose Photography

If you visited the site and checked out our sidebar last month you may have noticed we flashed a Kickstarter campaign initiated by Lauren to support her other dance habit.

But after all she’s done for you and I, Lauren deserves a little more, so I pulled her aside and asked a few questions about this side we don’t see.

And, you know Lauren’s a giver so, she’s got something for readers to WIN later. Read on…

Dance Advantage: Frankly, most of our readers have only seen your nerdy side, Lauren. A conscientious dance teacher, meticulous academic… they may not know you have a rebellious streak, making work as an independent dance artist in Chicago. What gives?

Lauren Warnecke: I started becoming interested in choreography during undergraduate school, and created about three pieces there that I would actually be willing to vouch for. I went to a school that is notorious for producing avant garde and innovative dancemakers, so while I’m a thoroughly trained bunhead, I also have sensitivities toward strange modern dance.

After school I became heavily involved with teaching and community theatre, choreographing seven full-length musicals, going to graduate school, and essentially “retiring” from the modern dance community. [Read more of that story in Lauren's article Life Lessons on Injury: Arriving at Plan C]

Two years ago I joined the board of directors for a small modern dance company (Synapse Arts) that was doing work I really liked. Synapse’s Artistic Director, Rachel Damon, had gone to the same school as me, and offered me a rare opportunity to create some work for the company. This was exactly the spark I needed to come out of creative hibernation! It opened many doors for me to reenter the community, and even moreso opened my mind to making work that I really care about. I feel that a lot of the work I make is actually informed by the time I spent away from the dance community… it takes cues from pedestrian life and musical theatre that are an important part of my development as an artist.

©Kelly Rose Photography

DA: I know as an artist it’s sometimes hard to talk about your work but put on the nerdy teacher hat for a moment and tell your students: What is Grind all about?

LW: Grind is a dance that is rooted in definitions of artistic success. For me, success is a three-fold conundrum that is sought through money, praise, and self-actualization. All three intertwine to create some perception of success in all of us, that ultimately can never be acheived.

In Grind, this idea manifests through the eyes of four 1950′s american housewives. For me, this is an era in which evidence of the “perfect” family and the “perfect” woman were ever-present in the media and every woman strived for this, even when things were falling apart around them. The piece is deeply satirical and manifests as an absurd comment on the state of success. I first premiered Grind last August in Chicago, and since then it’s undergone a huge evolution into a brand new piece. This new iteration premieres Feb 10-12 in Chicago at the Drucker Center.

DA: Tell us about your collaborators for Grind and a little about the artistic process.

LW: I rely heavily on games, chance devices, and a meticulous process to create a work. This 30-minute piece was largely created from one 16-count phrase manipulated in many, many, many different ways.

Grind is part of a pilot program at Links Hall called the Apprentice Producers Program. Through this program, we are offered two venues at discounted rates over the course of 9 months, as well as a paid production manager. This allows the artist to focus more intensely on her work and not have to worry about things like press releases, schedules, etc.

I’ve been working with the same dancers (Katie Matteson, Vienna Willems and Jenna Dillon) since March 2011, developing the piece. After the initial premiere in August I knew I wanted to keep working with the same dancers, the same idea and the same movement vocabulary, but essentially everything else has changed. I enlisted sound artist, Russell Weiss to create a sound score that uses era-specific sounds such as kitchen appliances, old commercials, and 1950′s love songs. Lighting is also very important to me, and Francesca Bourgault has beautifully lit both versions of the piece. Without having had the opportunity to perform this piece and hear feedback from that first experience, I don’t think Grind could have evolved to this point, so I think it’s a fantastic luxury to have become involved with this program.

DA: Congratulations on your successful Kickstarter campaign. That’s gotta feel good. Any quick tips for others who want to give Kickstarter a try?

LW: Kickstarter was great, but also really challenging! The potential problem with Kickstarter is that if you don’t reach your goal, you don’t get anything. In some cases, I think this inspires more pledges, but it’s a dangerous game to play.

I chose our goal extremely carefully, and put tons of time and energy into the campaign, as did all of the dancers and collaborators. I posted updates about once every two weeks and continually pushed on social media and through emails. I saw people coming out of the woodwork and donating who I either hadn’t talked to in years, or had never donated before. This is great, but you can really only do a campaign like this every few years. When I see people continually “Kickstarting”, you can easily tap out people’s enthusiasm because it’s something you have to push really hard at in order for it to be successful.

Ultimately, raising money to make dances is hard no matter how you slice it!

DA: What’s behind the photos we’re seeing here? You’ve created calendars from the shoot?

©Kelly Rose Photography

LW: I started talking to photographer Kelly Rose very early in the process. Kelly and I have known one another since 3rd grade, and reconnected over this project. She has shot a lot of pin-ups, and I didn’t exactly know why, but I knew I wanted to work with her on Grind. Our conversation really helped me to find the connection between success, perfection, and the vintage housewives.

Consequently, I also recently bought a fixer-upper with a vintage “party basement”. The style of my basement perfectly compliments the era that I’m working with in the piece, and dancer Katie Matteson happens to have a closet full of vintage clothes. The photos are loosely based on images that are seen in the piece, and on the interpersonal relationships of the characters we have created. I really wanted Grind to be more than a dance…. the goal is to create a visual world around these four women and this iconic decade that is more tangible than a 30-minute dance.

The calendars were dreamed up as a marketing alternative to the same old posters and postcards you see, as well as an additional way to bring some income to the project. Plus, Kelly’s photos were so amazing I couldn’t just pick two for the press release and let the others go.

DA: Grind isn’t the only dance on the program in February. What’s the low down on Refill?

Refill is the part-two of the Apprentice Producers Program. We will premiere the latest (and last) version of Grind, and are splitting the bill with another choreographer, Enid Smith. The show is Feb 10-12 at the Fasseas Whitebox at The Drucker Center (1535 N. Dayton, Chicago). You can buy tickets at fanfueled.com or at the door.

Win a Grind calendar!

To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment with your favorite “success” quote.

I’ll select 4 winners randomly from the comments.

Should you be a winner, you’ll have the good fortune to look upon Lauren and her 1950s housewives crew every month of the year when you win a Grind wall calendar featuring fabulous photography by Kelly Rose.

You must be 18 or over and a U.S. resident to win.

Contest will end Saturday, January 21st at NOON EST.

By now your stockings have probably been hung by the chimney with care…

But you’ve still got dancers on your gift list! And Amazon is telling you that <del>paying expedited $hipping fee$</del> a dose of Elf Magic is your only Ho Ho Hope for the timely arrival of those gifts.

Never fear, the digital age is here! These gifts are a procrastinator’s dream:

Choreography for Teachers

DancesToGo.com provides à la carte choreography for a variety of dance levels and genres. They’ve got a great group of guest choreographers with years of experience as teachers (and I’m not just saying that ’cause I’m one of them)!

One way to gift it: You may not know which choreography would be most useful for the gift-recipient. Since Dances To Go uses PayPal’s services, you could send money to your dancer friend or family member (they will need a PayPal account) for use at the site. While you’re at it, send them an iTunes gift so they can grab the music, too!

DanceStudioOwner.com gives studio owners what they need to be successful – e-books and articles, monthly teleseminars, templates, checklists, customizable forms, and plenty of support in an often isolating job. This is one of my favorite resources because they offer so much value at affordable monthly and yearly membership plans. Gift a membership and make your favorite studio owner very happy.

Digital Reading

Whether your gift-recipient is Team Nook or Team Kindle, you can give specific digital publications as gifts at the Nook Store or Kindle Store (just look for the Buy/Give as a Gift links on the book’s purchase page).

Simply comment to enter and you could be a winner. Plus learn a little greeting card trivia, when you visit!

Commercial greeting cards have been sent during the holidays since the mid-19th century.

In 1843, John Calcott Horsley was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole to illustrate the first Christmas card. English Parliament had passed the Postage Act in 1840, making it possible to send letters for a penny throughout the UK. In a clever business move, Cole printed two batches of the greeting, selling a total of 2,050 cards that year for a shilling each. The card read “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You” and displayed a happy family enjoying Christmas festivities. Unfortunately critics believed the card, which showed a child enjoying a sip of wine, was “fostering the moral corruption of children.” Nevertheless, the custom of sending cards at the holidays became popular and within 10 years Christmas cards were the rage of England. Of the original Christmas cards printed, only 12 are known to still exist, two of which are in the Hallmark Historical Collection.
That’s one talented Walrus.

And Liz Vacco, the creator of the Petite Feet DVD, is pretty accomplished herself. She is a Yale Theatre Studies graduate.
The first in a series of tap shoe reviews, Tristan begins with the "Cadillac" of tap shoes, Capezio's Brazilian K360. He covers their construction, features, and compares them to the American-made Kays. Don't miss his consumer video for the opinions of tappers of all ages.

About Shoe Reviews:

For my reviews, I personally wear, practice, and perform in the shoes. The demands that the shoes are subjected to are rigorous and must be considered when compared to the skill level for which the shoe is intended. ~ Tristan

Look for more tap shoe reviews in The Great Tap Shoeganza.

Capezio’s K360 (Brazilian)

I chose to review the Brazilian-made K360 on the grounds that it is the shoe that the majority of professional and pre-professional dancers will buy. Costing roughly $200 and up, these are the shoes you are more likely to find on store shelves and on the internet.

The Capezio website directs buyers to Amazon.com to purchase their “Kays”, and the only make available on the site is the Brazilian-made K360. An American-made pair is only available through select retailers, like Dancing Fair, and if you are lucky enough to find one in a retail store, be prepared to dish out up to $400 for a pair (taps not included).

VS

There is a heated debate among tap dancers concerning the Capezio K360 and where it is made. A dancer spends a good deal of time and money getting what is considered the Cadillac of tap shoes only to hear, “Oh, those are the Bazilians? I like the Americans much better.” Good luck getting them to tell you WHY they don’t like the shoe. I think and I heard are more than likely to accompany their lambasting lamentations.

I sat down with my tap shoe consultant, Matthew A. Shroepfer, to get the rundown on the actual differences between the Brazilian and American made Capezio K360.

Let’s take a look at the similarities:(...)

Which is the right tap shoe for you? TAPography columnist, Tristan Bruns wants to help you decide. With this brief history of the Capezio brand and its tap shoes, he launches a series of posts which will include his personal, non-sponsored tap shoe reviews from major shoemakers.

Capezio

Photo courtesy Crossett Library Bennington College

Salvatore Capezio opened his first store in New York City in 1887, the sign above the door reading The Theatrical and Historical Shoemaker. Located diagonally across from the old Metropolitan Opera House, Capezio made a name for himself repairing pointe shoes for the Met’s dancers. Capezio tried his hand at dance shoe construction and, appreciating the challenge of combining his cobbler expertise with the complex engineering of dance shoes, Capezio made the transition from cobbler to shoemaker.

Today, Capezio is considered by many to be the leading brand producing shoes for dance as well as dance wear. What began with pointe shoes has now expanded to soft ballet, jazz, modern/contemporary, TAP, character and theatre dance, as well as offering a full line of bodywear, legwear and accessories. Though spread out across the globe, Capezio has kept up it’s homely pretense of being a “family business” by involving family members in almost every aspect of the enterprise. The company’s reputation for maintaining long-lasting professional relationships and willingness to produce custom orders for individuals is well known.

Capezio Tap Shoes

Receiving my first pair of Capezio K360s as a child felt like an initiation into the the larger tap community. At the time, all of the best tap dancers were wearing the K360, or “Kays” as they are affectionately called, and soon all the best tap dancers in my studio had a pair. The Kays were heavy, both in weight and in price tag, and pressure to use them was a task that I was delighted to undertake.

Photo by Metromoxie (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

Recently there has been an undercurrent of disapproval for the Capezio K360. Claims that the quality has dropped while the price has risen has caused much movement in the tap shoe industry. Hearing the outcries of distressed dancers, other companies have stepped up to the plate to appease the rising number of tap dancers looking for professional level shoes, in particular Bloch and So Danca. Regardless, many dancers still stick with their Kays claiming that, while admitting frustration with the manufacturer, that the Capezio K360 is so far ahead of the game that it is still the optimal choice for advanced and professional level tap dancers.

The way I see it, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. While the K360 may be the reigning king of tap shoes, we must not forget that they have an extensive line of tap shoes to choose from. As a professional tap dancer I always wondered if the shoes make the man, or vice versa, and the only way to find out is to wear them and practice in them myself.

For information regarding key terms, types of tap shoes, shoe making materials and shoe making procedures, please refer to the previous TAPography articles in The Great Tap Shoeganza, whose table of contents can be found at Introducing The Great Tap Shoeganza!

Patience Clements is the company pianist for Charleston Ballet Theatre and has been accompanying dance classes for over 30 years, beginning when she was still a teen. She studied both ballet and piano growing up in Washington D.C. and attended Interlochen Arts Academy, American University, and Manhattan School of Music. Patience has played master and company classes for Nashville Ballet, ABT, Alvin Ailey, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Eliot Feld Ballet, Harkness Ballet, Susan Jaffe, Gelsey Kirkland, Jill Eathorne-Bahr, Paul Vasterling, and many highly respected teachers.

New Piano Music for Ballet Class is a series of four CDs of original music for ballet class created to provide proper tempos and accents for all barre and center work in the serious ballet class.

Ms. Clements sent two of her discs for review and I’m pleased to be able to share my thoughts on them with you. Either (and perhaps all four) would be great additions to your studio music library. Both are available on Amazon, iTunes, CDBaby, Asgard, and more. Our links to Amazon (click the pics) and iTunes can be found below.

New Piano Music for the Dedicated Dancer with Susan Jaffe

This, the fourth album in the series, is the result of a collaboration between Ms. Clements and former American Ballet Theatre dancer, highly regarded teacher, and choreographer, Susan Jaffe. Each piece was created for Ms. Jaffe’s class at her Princeton Dance and Theatre studio and later recorded in the studio.

Teachers will really appreciate the assortment of tracks for both barre and center, variety of tempos, and clear yet dynamic phrasing. Students will enjoy the diverse musical styles and almost singable melodies.

Most unique about the album is that a few of the compositions feature synthesized guitar or other string instrumentation. I personally like the change-up, knowing that students tend to respond favorably when given something a little out of the ordinary. But for those that prefer the more standard keyboard accompaniment, a duplicate solo piano version is usually provided side by side with the augmented track.

New Piano Music for the Dedicated Dancer has 35 tracks and is ideal for your intermediate or advanced classes.
New Piano Music for the Young Dancer

This album for beginning to intermediate dancers has 15 “Barre,” 10 “Center,” and 12 “Allegro” compositions. Though, as Ms. Clements urges in her album cover these may be interchangeable, everything is tidily arranged with plenty of lively tunes to keep younger or new students engaged and moving.

The tracks on this album are titled, conveniently giving clues about the musical style of each. There are Polonaise, Tango, Ragtime, Waltzes, and plenty of Polka. There’s even a hint of Broadway among the 37 compositions. New Piano Music for the Young Dancer features longer bands for beginners to fully explore each exercise and, once again, you’ll find tempos that are clear and appropriate for novice dancers.

This time, Ms. Clements’ Dance Advisor and collaborator is Kathleen Callaghan, artistic director of the Centennial Youth Ballet and a ballet instructor for the acclaimed dance program of Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation.
She has published the journal and workbook, making them available beyond her own dance school so we talk with Nants about the book and how she encourages journal-writing in her own ballet classes.

“Sometimes in ballet it is easy to recall the corrections, but it is harder to celebrate the successes.”

Fellow dance teacher Nants Foley wants to help her students do both. And so, she suggests they keep a journal of their progress in class and write down their combinations and corrections.

She’s created a special book for her students, including space for recording their class work and progress as well as additional content like checklists, quotes, ballet vocabulary, foot care, and more.

Thinking (and rightly so) that other students and teachers might benefit from her efforts, she has published the 70-page journal and workbook and is making them available beyond her own dance school.

I know many of you are actively aware of the value of logging your progress in dance and some use dance diaries as a tool with your own students. So, I caught up with Nants to talk with her about A Dancer’s Steps and ask how she encourages journal-writing in her own ballet classes.

Dance Advantage: Give us a little background on your dance history.

Nants Foley: I have been dancing all my life, though never professionally. I was fortunate enough to train under Olga Ziceva and Richard Gibson in San Mateo, CA for many years, though I chose college over career in dance.

I came back to ballet seriously 15 years ago when my daughter was 6. I live in a small town in the central coast region of California. I wanted her to have the same great training I did and there were no teachers! I found my excellent training and my background in business teaching made me a valuable resource in the dance community.

I am blessed to be teaching at San Benito Dance Academy in Hollister now. It is a studio with a commitment to excellence and a mission to nurture the bodies, minds and spirits of its students.

DA: Did you keep a dance journal throughout your own dance training?

NF: When I was young, people kept diaries and scrapbooks. I had a scrapbook where I kept all things ballet related: Ticket stubs from performances I attended, pictures from favorite dancers, the combinations I was working on. I still have it and it makes me smile.

The Artist's Way on Amazon.com

I have used journaling as a creative tool ever since discovering Julie Cameron’s The Artists’ Way years ago.

DA: Ah! I’m familiar with and have practiced some of Ms. Cameron’s techniques.

When did you first start encouraging your students to bring a notebook to class with them? Do you require it?

NF: Right now I am doing our summer intensive. This is the first time a notebook has been required. They may bring any type of notebook.

I have been encouraging it for awhile, and many already had developed the discipline to use one. I made it mandatory because this intensive is really intense!

DA: What does the process do for the student?

NF: The use of a book is an exceptional tool for many reasons. Students write their combinations so they can practice at home. They make note of their corrections so they can review them before their next class.

These are some of the obvious benefits day to day. But the most important component is that they have a snapshot in time of where they are in their ballet education and growth. In ballet, it is so easy to focus on what one is doing incorrectly or poorly.

The writing process allows them to go back and reflect and remember, allowing them to see how far they have come in their journey.

DA: How do you incorporate and encourage the use of this journal in your classes? Do you give them “homework” in each class or, is what they do with the notebook pretty much self-led?

NF: What they do with the notebook is self-led. It is a tool offered to them.

The truly dedicated students go for it. I don’t give them homework with one notable exception. I work a lot with students on how to set goals.

For summer intensive, each student was required to set three goals. These were written in the notebook. They also wrote the specific action items needed to achieve each goal.

There is a time limit…the end of the summer program. Already we have seen several students complete a goal they set at the start of summer. It is really inspiring for them, for the other students in class and, of course, for me!

I set three goals for myself: To regain my right split, to lose 7 pounds and to eat 5 fruits or vegetables per day. I’m doing really well on all three!

DA: Congratulations! I am a total advocate of goal-setting. I’ve used goal pages and journaling in my own classes and find myself talking about it a lot when students e-mail asking for advice. It’s all over Dance Advantage – for lesson and career planning, too.

What has been the most rewarding feedback you’ve received from students about keeping their journal?

NF: There has been lots of it! The completion of goals is huge. The parents are noticing the change in their children and sharing it with me. And my personal favorite is when a student asks me to autograph a copy of my notebook!

DA: So, back to A Dancer’s Steps. At what point did you decide to put together the book?

NF: I looked for a journal like this for my students, and found nothing . There are fabulous ballet reference books. And beautiful journals abound. I just couldn’t find the two things combined.

DA: Do your dancers use them in class?

NF: My dancers use them in class daily.

I have a short break mid-class, and many take the opportunity to write in them at that time. I have a weekly set barre and center based on a theme introduced the first day of the week and repeated without further discussion all week. There is a lot of writing on the first day of the week!

DA: The book is a mix of content and open spaces. How did you decide what would be in the bound workbook?

NF: I included the reference information I would have liked as a young student and my favorite quotes found over the years.

My undergraduate and graduate degrees are in architecture and design, so I enjoyed playing with the design of each page, choosing the form and the function I felt would be most usable for students.

DA: I really appreciate the design. It’s simple and attractive without being too frilly – good for all ages and genders even.

Which is your favorite section?

NF: I think the whole piece on SMART goals is the most valuable piece.

If we don’t have written goals that are truly achievable with a time limit, we only have dreams. “Someday I will be able to do the splits…or a triple pirouette…or be able to jump for 3 minutes without stopping.” I encourage the use of goals in all areas of life.

DA: That would be my pick too. I think I’ve found a kindred spirit in you, Nants! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your journal with us.

If you are a student or teacher and would like a copy, contact Nants at

A book shipped to an individual is $12. They can be paid for by sending the money through PayPal.

Copies of A Dancer’s Steps: a Ballet Journal and Workbook are sold at San Benito Dance Academy for $10.

If a teacher or studio would like to purchase these for their class, Nants would need about two weeks lead time. There is a discount for multiple books. Just contact her via that e-mail address above.

Do you keep a dance notebook or journal?

Do you require or encourage their use in your classes?

What do you put in your journal?

As you know, Dance Advantage values highly any tool that helps students log their progress and self-examine the learning and creative process. Having been sent a copy of A Dancer’s Step for review, Nichelle feels it is worthy of recommendation.

DA is also excited to announce an upcoming project and e-course that is designed to help you reach that next level in your dance study with a mix of goal-setting, progress recording, creative writing, and more. We will unveil this very soon. Please stay tuned!!

With an aim to raise the barre on nutrition and encourage healthy eating habits in the dance world and beyond, ballet dancers, Julia Erickson and Aaron Ingley created Barre, a real food bar made with natural ingredients. But so are healthy snacks.

Finding something that’s grab-and-go yet meets the nutritional needs of a dancer is frequently a challenge.

In fact this was the challenge Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre principal, Julia Erickson set out to conquer in her kitchen in early 2010: To create a better energy bar for herself. One that tasted better and was made from ingredients she could pronounce.

What she whipped up caught the attention of fellow dancers. She made more, selling an early version to PBT’s summer students. Recognizing a need in the dance community, she teamed up with friend, partner, and fellow dancer Aaron Ingley and formed a business.

With an aim to raise the barre on nutrition and encourage healthy eating habits in the dance world and beyond, they created Barre, a real food bar made with natural ingredients and superfoods like hemp seed, flax, and dates “by dancers for <del>dancers</del> everyone.”

Barre’s first flavor, Pirouette: Cinnamon Nut Twirl officially launched on July 5. Not only have Julia and Aaron shared a few samples of their tasty triumph with me but they’ve agreed to share their story, their mission, and their own tips and ideas for eating healthfully on a dancer’s schedule with Dance Advantage readers.

Dance Advantage: I suspect you’ve tried a lot of nutrition and energy bars, and maybe even depended on them at times while on the go as dancers. What changed your mind about the effectiveness and nutritional value of the majority of bars out on the market?

Aaron Ingley: Nutrition bars have become really big business in the last ten years and there are gazillions on the market. In the beginning they seemed like a godsend for dancers—easy to eat between rehearsals and, in the beginning, decently healthy. What has happened since then is that everyone and their brother started making bars to turn a quick profit and the quality of ingredients suffered.
The Ballet Combination Book and Ballet Step by Step by Dance Teacher Press serve two different uses and audiences. But you'll love the simplicity and practicality of both. For teachers, the classic combinations can save you time or serve up a little inspiration. For students or parents, terminology is presented clearly in a useful and logical order.

What teacher doesn’t like to be bursting with new ideas and practical tools at the start of a new season?

Seeing no hands raised, I’d like to introduce you to two great resources offered to me for review by Dance Teacher Press.

The Ballet Combination Book

The Ballet Combination Book is what started it all for Janet Jerger, a veteran dance teacher from the Midwest who decided to put together her notes and combinations developed over the years into a resource for others.

Just shy of 60, roughly 8 x 11in. pages, the paperback is thin enough to slide into your class binder or notebook for reference but contains more than 250 combinations for ballet class.

These are organized simply in a general class order, from Plié to Reverence. Plus, a few extra turn-out exercises for the floor and standing, occasional teaching tips, a condensed glossary, CD recommendations, and some guidelines for use of the book.

The Ballet Combination Book isn’t weighed down with class level recommendations for barre and center combinations. It lets the teacher choose (...)

I was sent the following picture books from Barefoot Books for review and found them to be as educational as they are beautiful.

With lush illustration, a story CD, and details that take the reader beyond the story, these are gifts that will grow with a child and garner appreciation from adults as well.

The Barefoot Book of Ballet Stories

Written by mother/daughter team, Jane Yolen and Heidi E. Y. Stemple, this book includes the stories of 6 classic ballets: Coppélia, Swan Lake, Cinderella, The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and Daphnis and Chloe. Both writers studied ballet growing up – Jane, at the the School of American Ballet – and stay connected to ballet through Heidi’s daughter who dances with Amherst Ballet in Massachusetts, where they all live.

The stories read very much like classic fairy tales, with elegant dialogue and descriptions, making this appropriate reading for school-aged children.

Artist Rebecca Guay’s rich illustrations, teachers and lovers of ballet will be happy to know, depict dancers in aesthetically and anatomically accurate poses and leaps.

The story CD is narrated by stage and screen actress Juliet Stevenson (Emma, Bend It Like Beckham). Short excerpts of each ballet score are played (...)

STAY TUNED!

The tap shoe has evolved into a precision instrument that, in the hands of a capable dancer, becomes the ultimate tool for self-expression in contemporary percussive dance. Joining Tristan as a consultant for this series, is Matthew A. Schroepfer, Certified Pedorthist and owner of Dancing Fair Inc., a manufacturer and wholesale distributor of quality dance footwear, bodywear, legwear and dance accessories.

A Tap Shoe Is A Tap Shoe Is A…

No, not all tap shoes are created equal, and choosing the right pair is an important step in developing your style as an artist. The proper tap shoe should be matched to a dancer based on the dancer’s physicality and musicality.

In other words, dancers should choose their tap shoes based on how hard or how much they dance and what notes they wish to incorporate into their musical palate. Special attention should be paid to the quality of the materials used to build the shoe, the actual construction of the shoe, and the durability of the shoe.

Of course, it never hurts to exercise frugality. Thanks in part to the tap dance festival circuit, the Internet, and an outcropping of young talent, there is an informed and active consumer base for all things tap dance, from the shoes to the floors to the type of microphone best suited to capture the warm, organic sounds of tap. With a larger consumer base and a more competitive market, the modern tap shoe is not only constructed better than ever before, but is on the verge of a major break in price.

Talent is talent, there are no two ways about it, and there is no magic shoe that transforms poor technique into artistry. However, the right tool is necessary for optimal self-expression. Would John Marin’s watercolors be as captivating if he had a crummy paintbrush that left molted bristles from its tuft?

As your interest in tap grows, your body and skill level will demand new and better constructed tap shoes.
Warning: After you’ve found the perfect pair, be wary of the most neglected aspect of tap shoe ownership: knowing when it is time to get a new pair.

Three years feels too long since my last visit to Jacob's Pillow. Dance Interactive is how I've been getting my Pillow fix lately. The website provides a tremendous opportunity for educating students and encouraging appreciation for dance on a global level. Drawing from the extensive Jacob Pillow Archives, it is a collection you won't find elsewhere online.

IMAGE" width="300" height="200" />
Ted Shawn Theatre, 2008; photo Christopher Duggan

It’s been almost three years since I stepped onto the Jacob’s Pillow grounds nestled in the Berkshire mountains of Western Massachusetts. I’ve visited several times, mainly during my pre-mommy, 2004-06 term as Dance Director for a nearby summer camp. Three years feels too long.

Jacob’s Pillow is the only dance institution recognized as a National Historic Landmark by the federal government and the woodsy retreat has been drawing legendary dancers since Ted Shawn purchased the property in 1930. As friend and fellow writer, Nancy Wozny observed “It’s hard to walk around on these hallowed dance grounds and not think about all the icons who traveled these very paths.”

At the same time, it’s thrilling to share the same fresh Berkshire air as the current and up-and-coming stars of dance who come to perform in the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (which on March 2, 2011, received a National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama for its contributions to the creation, growth, and support of the arts in the United States) or study in the Pillow’s historic studios each summer.

The rustic atmosphere of Jacob’s Pillow is definitely part of its allure but I’m glad to report that visitors worldwide now have access to a brand new website, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Interactive, and can experience Pillow dance – both artists of bygone eras and present-day dancemakers – without making the trip to Massachusetts.(...)
