Sunday Snapshot: Born from a Boombox

Berit Alits bought her first single-lens reflex camera (a Nikon D40) about 4 years ago.

“I took pictures of everything. And I mean everything!” she says. Since then she’s made a series of discoveries.

First was toy photography. “I studied a lot about the light, composing photos, being creative and telling little stories.” Berit explains. Next, was portraits. Berit worked on a project called Faces of the World (mainly photographing international colleagues from the engineering company in Ireland for which she worked).

“I discovered how much I love people!” Berit says of the project. It’s a passion that’s evident throughout her portraits of young actors, bands, dancers, couples, families, and individuals.

“I love capturing creative people like dancers,” she comments. “I love how expressive they are. It’s so easy work with them, movement is just so natural for dancers. A photographer has to give them very little direction (or none at all) of how to pose. I just ask the dancer to dance in a particular place and I can be creative composing the photo.”

This photo features Kenny, a breakdancer from Clonmel, Ireland. He is a dance instructor in a local dance crew called Dance Revolution.

“I could say that he is the life and soul of the local dance community,” Berit explains, “with lots of friends and lots of people who look up to him.”
