David Cooper came to dance photography when, in 1979, he received a dance grant from the Canada Council and spent two weeks at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet photographing classes and rehearsals.

“This photo of dancers from 605 Collective in Vancouver is from a teaching session at my studio in October.” explains David. “I was influenced by some images with Lois Greenfield and chose to experiment with fabric. I have a studio with a sprung dance floor and a white Marlee dance floor.”

David just finished teaching a Dance and Performance Photography workshop over 7 days at the Banff Centre. The photographers has access to dress rehearsals for dance, theatre and music/opera.
About the Photographer: David Cooper originally studied architecture, but decided to pursue his interest in photography when an opportunity arose to work with the Vancouver Playhouse. He has now developed a nation-wide reputation in Canada as an excellent dance photographer, renowned for “Capturing the moment” — not easy in dance! He has photographed prima ballerina Evelyn Hart throughout her career, and created design and production photography for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Alberta Ballet, Ballet British Columbia, and Les Grand Ballets Canadians, among others. His work for theatre companies has appeared in newspapers, magazines and souvenir programs across Canada. Mr. Cooper runs a studio in Vancouver where, in addition to his performing arts photography, he works with design and advertising clientele.
