Thanks for stopping by, Sali. Very interesting! I had never heard this - or at least not to my recollection anyway. I'm sorry if you find the term offensive.

(For anyone else who is unaware of this connection a couple links: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thumb" rel="nofollow">Link1</a>, <a href="http://womenshistory.about.com/od/mythsofwomenshistory/a/rule_of_thumb.htm" rel="nofollow">Link2</a>)

Great info. Can't wait to try it. Please consider editing #10. The term "rule of thumb" comes from an 1800's law that allowed husbands the right to hit their wife with a switch no bigger that their thumb". Thank you

I have a few good ones. One of the biggest sources of noise back stage is when students finish a dance and leave stage.

For many students, the excitement, adrenaline and applause that comes with a recital, causes a "mini-celebration" and moment of bonding, right when you get through performing. High-fives, cheers and then a sprint to the dressing rooms often follows. Ask students to celebrate in the dressing rooms (if appropriate distance from the stage area) or after the show, not while exiting the stage or in the wings.

Where am I? I never take for granted that any students understand glow tape, center/up/down/right/left stage until I physically show them on the stage the recital is actually performed on. I tell them all year in class and practice in studio as well. However, in blackouts, on stage, not familiar with glow tape can cause dances not to be centered, etc. It can also confuse students for their exits and entrances. The 2 hours tops rehearsal will pay for itself 10 fold as the show runs smoother and has the ever important flow to keep the audience involved and the energy in the air.

Do you have an active curtain opening and closing during your recital? If so, be sure, for safety and liability reasons, to make any students who end on stage VERY aware of the curtain line.

I will leave you with these three for now...I am sure I have more but, these are 3 good ones.

Tap w/u Soon,
Anthony

Ha! A common problem but not one I'd worry the kids with, I think. What do you studio owners think?

I would add
"Make sure your parents have paid all outstanding balances before the recital. Failure to do so, will prevent you from dancing on stage".
