Wonderful! I’m so glad you found it useful! And yes, it helps when you know the material, but I’ve taught basic tumbling skills to young kids as well and classroom management and knowing how to guide/spot were way more important than actually doing. Keep up the good work!

This a great article! I’ve been a student teacher for 5 months now and these tips really helped me improve! It’s not easy teaching 4-12 year old kids how to tumble when I can’t do it myself but I try my hardest!

Brilliant!! The task of writing a job description for assistant teachers has just come to the top of my list – and then I check your latest posting, and there it is!! thanks for the help
i had my first day as assistant teacher today and i was really overwhelmed by the younger kids
and i learnt i need to be a lot more vocal and take more initiative
im excited for tomorrow to show that i can do it!

Nichelle, thanks again for an invaluable resource for my students! My teaching assistant are responsible for finding their own “sub” if they are going to be gone. It works great, gives them a sense of responsibility for the kids in their class, and also teaches them a little about how life as a professional dance teacher works! Thank you! Sarah

Yes, absolutely, assistants may be volunteering their time but part of assisting means regarding it as you would a job. That means notifying your teacher when scheduling conflicts arise or when you are too sick to work. In fact, assistantship is great preparation for becoming a valued employee and volunteer in adult life. Thanks, Jennifer!

All to be assistants should also know that the teacher is counting on you to be in there. If you are sick or going on vacation you should give the the teacher plenty of notice.
