Here's a great gift idea for dancers. Give this inexpensive sterling silver necklace: http://www.wishwrap.com/products/Silver_Ballerina_Grace_Pendant-18-0.html
It even comes beautifully packaged with a wish of your choice! (I like 'passion' or 'beauty').

I like the charity idea, however I prefer to give a charity gift because then the receiver knows you have 'bought' them a present whilst you still get to donate to the charity in question. I think this is a good option when you want to give to charity but also want to give a tangibl present to your family/friend.

Our AD/SO has asked us not to buy her gifts anymore, if you want to get her something, make a nice card, she already has every ballerina figurine there is and doesn't feel a need for more. Almost everyone gets her one anyway. For my other ballet teacher that recently moved away, we would always get her funky jewelry and stuff like that. It's what she liked, and one of the girls we all dance with's mom owns a gift/jewelry store that is locally famous for having good dance teacher gifts. Handmade cards are really nice. Usually, we'll try to take an art-y picture of our whole ballet class in black and white and mount it on a card made of scrapbooking paper. Sometimes we'll decorate and sign pointe shoes, but they sort of smell and no one really knows what to do with them when they get them, but one of my old teachers really appreciated them. My friend's AD decorates Christmas trees with signed pointe shoes from old students. Usually inexpensive, homemade, thoughtful, and dance-y but not cheesey is the way to go.
