You've brought up a good point that wasn't fully expressed in this article. I definitely think that a good assistant program allows student teachers to "fly solo" at times. Working side by side with a teacher is a great way to learn. My experience assisting was similar and it was helped me prepare for taking my own classes. Thanks so much for your comment, Heather!

Re: student teachers.

I agree that a student teacher shouldn't really be used as the only teacher for a class, regardless of age group and or ability. I find an exception where the student is an assistant alongside the experienced teacher, preferably within the same class and at times taking the same class without the senior teacher present. It's an invaluable learning tool for the student teacher, meanwhile this set up ensures that the student teachers efforts are monitored. This can even be beneficial to students of the class for 1. they have 2 sets of eyes to assess and aid correction, and 2. the student teacher often better remembers how they struggled with and worked on particular steps, and can give more accessible information in that regard to the student.

I myself am a student teacher undertaking teacher training via the Cecchetti Method and currently studying the Advanced 2 level. I only assistant teach students who are at least 2 levels underneath myself, more predominately those in the early grades. Alongside this I have already gained qualifications to teach Jazz and had been regularly doing so before commencing teaching in ballet.

regards,
Heather
